‘Photography Now’ is a public conversation on the place of photography in contemporary culture concerning aspects of the production, dissemination and re-use of images in our information age. Given the ubiquity of amateur photography and the circulation of digital images, how do documentary and archival practices currently operate, particularly in a disaster environment? Issues of representation and the interpretation of events, the materiality of the photograph and notions of temporality will be discussed in relation to a range of contemporary photographic practices.
Dr Barbara Garrie lectures in Art History and Theory at the University of Canterbury and has researched aspects of contemporary photography and issues of spatiality in contemporary art practice. Melanie Oliver is director of The Physics Room and has an interest in the relationship between documentary, archival and contemporary art practices. Tim J Veling is a photographer and lectures at University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts. He is part of ‘Place in Time: The Christchurch Documentary Project’ and recently presented ‘THX 4 THE MEMORIES’ as part of the Christchurch Arts Festival.
