Parking
Parking at The Arts Centre Market Square
Access to The Arts Centre Market Square carpark is at 301 Montreal Street, Christchurch 8013. Turn left off Montreal Street into The Arts Centre, continue behind the Registry Additions building in front of you and park in the Market Square carpark. There are 30 minute unmetered carparks for Arts Centre visitors under the row of trees, facing Zen Sushi and The Physics Room. Please note these carparks are monitored by The Arts Centre.
Parking on Montreal Street or Worcester Boulevard
Metered carparks are available along the roadside on Montreal Street and Worcester Boulevard.
Parking at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū
Access to the Christchurch Art Gallery carpark is at 58 Gloucester Street, Christchurch 8013. It is a 24 hour ticketed parking building, and you will receive a ticket from a machine on entry. You will need to make payment prior to leaving the building at the yellow payment machines inside the carpark. Keep your validated parking ticket to lift the bar at the exit.
Getting here by bus
Bus 17 crosses Montreal Street just south of the gallery; alight outside the Council offices on Hereford Street. It is a one-minute walk from there to the gallery. All buses go through the central city bus interchange, which is a ten minute walk from The Physics Room. The Christchurch Bus Interchange is located on the Corner of Lichfield and Colombo Streets, Christchurch 8011. Plan your bus trip using the Metro bus website here.
Getting here by cycle
Cycle racks are available in The Arts Centre Market Square carpark, adjacent to The Physics Room.
Getting here by foot
The Physics Room office and gallery are located in the Registry Additions building in The Arts Centre at 301 Montreal Street. It is centrally located for explorations of The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, Centre of Contemporary Art Toi Moroki, Hagley Park, Canterbury Museum, Riverside Market and other central city highlights.
Entering the Gallery
There is stepped access and ramped access to The Physics Room from The Arts Centre’s Market Square carpark. The ramp entry is on the left side of the Registry Additions building, ascending up to Zen Sushi and along a wide concrete platform to The Physics Room. There can be bistro tables and chairs occupying the platform during business opening hours.
Volunteer Support
Throughout gallery opening hours, there is a volunteer at the volunteer desk inside the front door. They are happy to answer any questions and provide support for your visit.
Items Not Allowed in the Gallery
Markers, putty or play dough, food, drinks, e-cigarettes or vaping devices are not allowed in the gallery.
Bathrooms/Companion Care Room
There is one accessible, gender neutral bathroom beyond the rear exit of the gallery. Please ask the gallery volunteer for directions or support. Access is from the rear exit of the gallery, down the internal hall to the staff kitchen, turn left, then right and the bathroom is located on the right. The bathroom is cleaned and refreshed daily.
There are also accessible bathrooms on the Ground Floor and Level 1 in the Boys’ High building, near the i-Site, within The Arts Centre, 2 Worcester Boulevard, Christchurch 8013.
Gallery Alarms
There is a fire alarm installed in the gallery space. If this alarm sounds, a volunteer will assist you in leaving the building via the main doors and outside into the emergency evacuation area in The Arts Centre’s Market Square carpark.
