Sleepwalker, a live performance by Luke Shaw
6-8pm, Thursday 25 January
The Physics Room, 301 Montreal Street, Ōtautahi Christchurch
All welcome, refreshments will be served.
Join us next Thursday evening for a performance of Sleepwalker, live audio accompanying the video by Luke Shaw. Originally shown at RM Gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau in late 2023, Sleepwalker is about how we remember—visually, audibly—and film’s relationship to memory. It draws on an archive of found slide images, and centres the sleepwalker as a spectral figure with the ability to move fluidly between memories and cinematic planes.
The live performance extends the logic of the original showing, where the recorded audio and video components were played on independent loops, asynchronous and constantly shifting. Here the audio is played live, flipping dominant visual hierarchies in favour of immediacy, imperfection, and the social potential of cinema.
Luke Shaw is an artist and musician from Ōtautahi Christchurch. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Ilam School of Fine Arts. His work is primarily sound based and stretches across the fields of music, installation, performance and video. Within his current research practice he is interested in the politics of communication and instances of listening and (mis)hearing. Luke is one half of the Opawa 45s and a facilitator at Paludal Gallery.
