Vanessa Narbey

Whisper II - Faint

13 Oct — 24 Oct 1999

Utilising the effects of light in her work, Vanessa Narbey creates installations that exist in a state of flux, subject to subtle changes in ambient lighting. Employing a visual economy of means Narbey scratches, prints and paints onto glass or perspex to generate sedimentary layers of visual meaning.

In her exhibition at The Physics Room, Whisper II - Faint, Narbey worked directly on the impressive windows of the gallery, tracing a labyrinth of marks onto the glass which cast shadows and reflections onto the walls of the space. These rhythmic patterns of texture and light evoke sheets of rain, or insect swarms, and invite consideration of the complex relationship between the hidden and the visible, the imagined and the real.
