Volume n. 1. a book, especially one of a set. 2. the amount of space (often expressed in cubic units) that a three-dimensional thing occupies or contains. 3. the size or amount of something, a quantity, 4. the strength or power of sound
Following in the footsteps of HARDSELL! and Sampler, Volume brings together five artists to respond to Gallery C in an investigation of current installation practice. Each artist in the series has a strong history and connection to artist run spaces throughout the country, and employs an experimental approach to their individual practise. The locating of Volume within the project space brings to the fore ideas relating to site and space, and grapples with notions of aesthetics and experience within the gallery. The Gallery C site becomes the primary [dis]connecting feature between the projects, highlighting both the condition of the space and the condition of their individual practice.
Each project will be accompanied by a catalogue, featuring a commissioned essay by a selected writer. The six catalogues produced will be joined together at the end of the project to provide a record of the responses generated by the series. The commissioned essays will provide critical context for the work, and through the publication we aim to disseminate the ideas contained within the projects to both a national and international audience.
