The first of what will be an annual Physics Room
publication, this self-contained book provides a cohesive view of
our gallery activities in 2001,
as well as an insight into current contemporary art practice in
New Zealand. The Annual contains images and ideas relating to the
2001 programme, plus weve thrown in some official reports
for good measure.
Gallery staff (Emma Bugden, Rosemary Forde) plus
invited writers have offered their own connection points to the
exhibition programme in a collection of texts relating to each 2001
show or series. Commissioned writers include art historian Deidre
Brown, curator Chris Chapman, former Log editor Gwyneth Porter and
locally based arts writers Sally McIntyre, Andrew Paul Wood, Lee
Devenish and Dan Arps.
Designed by Aaron Beehre, The Annual features page
spreads of lush full-colour images documenting each 2001 Physics
Room exhibition. The Fresh series
profiling contemporary New Zealand practitioners fills the first
section of the Annual, highlighting our commitment to this group
of young artists. Other featured projects for the year include the
Experimental Art Foundation / Physics Room exchange shows Gleam
and Thrash; The
Tomorrow People - a dynamic group show of NZ talent which
toured to LA; and the international, interactive, computer-based
sound art exhibition pHonic.
The Annual also farewells LOG Illustrated
magazine, featuring the cover art from all 15 issues and an interview
with editor Gwyneth Porter.

Every year is a big year for the Physics Room and
2001 was no exception. The Physics Room Annual provides a series
of snapshots into our activities during this time, with images,
ideas, and (of course!) some official reports as well. Gallery
staff, as well as invited writers, offer their thoughts and musings
on the exhibition programme, making no attempt to provide you with
the definitive exhibition essay, but instead offering their own
connection points to the shows - the shows that moved them, that
pushed their buttons, that made them think. What did you like?
