Justin Kerr
Opening preview: Tuesday 20 October 2009, 5.30pm
Driven by an inscrutable interest in a variety of commercially available and consumable materials, over the next four weeks Justin Kerr is set to hothouse The Physics Room’s rear gallery with yellow/gold.
Kerr’s playful formal investigations adapt cheap and readily available materials and amplify the after-effects and anomalies of their combinations. Providing his audience with a specifically tempered environment as evidence of prior activity, yellow/gold invests most significantly in the slippage and interaction between supposedly defined components.
Having previously harnessed a series of TVs and orb-like magnets to modulate and malform the stormy waves of static provided by the monitors, and in another context displayed high-vis spray-painted pot-plants alongside a homemade greenhouse containing vats of chemicals that patiently waited for strings of crystals to creep above their necks, Kerr creates tableaux that are sensitive, tentative centres of activity.
Justin Kerr lives and works in Christchurch. Recent solo and group exhibitions include: Rat Basket, HSP, Christchurch (2009); Let It Be Now, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, Christchurch (2008); Forestaurant, HSP, Christchurch (2007); making the naturescene, Jonathan Smart Gallery, Christchurch (2007) and Patient Property, HSP, Christchurch (2003).
