FLUTTER
Susan Jowsey
November 7 - November 29, 2001
Notions of longing and nostalgia filters through the work of Auckland
artist Susan Jowsey. In Flutter, images of birds populate the gallery
space, clustered and waiting. Screenprinted directly onto the walls
in pale pink face powder they are perhaps more akin to shadows and
traces than ornithology itself. The sensuous feminine touch and
smell of the powder evokes memories of maternal comfort and safety,
yet we are also aware of the physical instability of the work, erasable
at the touch of a finger, it sits poised for destruction in a state
of almost unbearable vulnerability.
