Layla Rudneva-Mackay
September 8 - October 8, 1999
For springsummercollection Dunedin artist Layla Rudneva-Mackay
has installed three ghostly handmade tents in The Physics Room.
From inside emanate the quiet murmurs of sleep, chatter, games.
Informed by the language of minimalism - repetition, grid, simplification
of form - Rudneva-Mackay has painstakingly recreated this everyday
environment to uncanny effect. The reductive sculptural form of
the tents is familiar and comforting, yet also references dislocation
and transience, a tension that is heightened by their relocation
within the gallery.
