Sanctuary by Zoe Roland
30 September - 20
October, 2003
Originally installed in Christchurch in 2000 by the
Oblique Trust, The Kiosk comes under the wing of The Physics Room in
2003. With 24 hour, 7 day a week access, The Kiosk is the hardest working
gallery around, providing a venue for contemporary art in the public
realm.
This month, Roland has placed her documentary Sanctuary in
various locations in the city centres of New Zealand. The 30-minute loop
was digitally filmed on Tiritiri Matangi Island as part of the 'Wild
Creations' artist residency scheme 2002 (supported by Creative NZ and
the Department of Conservation). Rolands film uses the visual and
aural aesthetic of a natural history doco, drawing on the notion of New
Zealand as a birds paradise, and clashing with the urban sounds
and elements surrounding The Kiosk and other city sites the film has
been inserted in.
