“The Papadopolis Brothers” by Jamie Richardson
10 November - 1 December, 2003
Originally installed in Christchurch in 2000 by the Oblique Trust, The
Kiosk comes under the wing of The Physics Room in 2003. With 24 hour,
7 day a week access, The Kiosk is the hardest working gallery around,
providing a venue for contemporary art in the public realm.
In November, The Kiosk is home to The Papadopolis Brothers, three plaster-cast
characters created by Christchurch artist Jamie Richardson. Switch, Slim
and Smiley Papadopolis might think they’re a menace to society,
but these tough guys are more comedy than thriller. With an absence of
detail like facial features and styled in monochrome, The Papadolpolis
Brothers refer to black & white mobster movies, while drawing on
the graphic styles of low-fi video games and comic exaggerations.
