I wanna be sedated (number two)
Stela Cruickshank
15 December 2003 - 12 January 2004
Originally installed in Christchurch in 2000 by the Oblique Trust, The
Kiosk comes under the wing of The Physics Room in 2003. With 24 hour,
7 day a week access, The Kiosk is the hardest working gallery around,
providing a venue for contemporary art in the public realm.
Stela Cruickshank’s work for The Kiosk is a reworking of her larger
scale installation project ‘I wanna be sedated’ exhibited
at Creation gallery in 2003. Collecting and modifying teddy bears and
soft toys, Stela gives her scruffy pre-loved creatures a slightly sinister
edge with garish red lipstick, “drug me” t-shirt slogans
and the added details of genitals and pubic hair! Tightly packed into
The Kiosk, these teds are trapped in cubbyholes of scary ’70s institutional
decor, awaiting either sedation or escape.
