Tales Untold: unearthing Christchurch histories
documents the first major SIAP project to occur in Christchurch,
in 1994.
ISBN 0-473-02972-3
Drawing on ideas of history and heritage, Tales Untold
brought a contemporary visual arts component to the Christchurch
City Councils Heritage Week, facilitating publicly sited artworks
by Ralph Paine, Denise Kum, Margaret Dawson, Lisa Reihana, Grant
Lingard, Deborah Lawler-Dormer, Cath Brown, Nicola Jackson, and
Rob Garrett.
Tales Untold revealed Christchurch as more than the English
garden city that it has become synonymous with, emphasizing
the layering of time and events, and the multiplicity of interpretations
and social constructions which combine to create history. By blasting
specific moments of Christchurchs history into a contemporary
site the Tales Untold artists and writers momentarily freeze
time. Memory, history, and perspectives are revealed in a state
of flux, available for reassessment and revision.
As well as including documentation of all artists projects, the Tales
Untold catalog features writing by Giovanni Intra, Te Maire
Tau, Jenny May, Dorthee Pauli, and Stevan Eldred-Grigg.
